Lowery Begaye and the Nation of Change Dancers will be our host drum. Lowery has traveled the world sharing his music and culture with audiences and we are pleased to have him with us for this event
This years feature demonstrator is Jim Sawgrass.
Sawgrass is a native Floridian and a member of the Muskogee Creek Indian Tribe. He served on the Florida Indian Council from 1991-1995. Sawgrass has been sharing his knowledge of the Southeastern Native American tribes for over 30 years.
Jim Sawgrass started the “Deep Forest Historical Native American Programs”. Since then, he has performed at places like schools, Pow Wows, state and national parks, Walt Disney World, Universal Studios, Sea World, New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festivals and many other places around the U.S. He also been featured on many television networks such as History Channel, Travel Channel and Discovery Channel.
We are thrilled to bring the Cody Blackbird Band to Gainesville in 2020.
Cody merges the Native American flute with powerful vocals into contemporary blues rock sounds with The Cody Blackbird Band. The band has been compared to a hybrid Native version of the famous Blues rock band “Blues Traveler”
Featured on NBC, PBS, WGN, MSNBC, CNN and The NY Times, Cody has performed over 1500 shows both nationally and internationally. The Cody Blackbird Band has shared the bill with such artists as Arlo Guthrie, Lynyrd Skynyrd’s Rickey Medlocke, Buffy St Marie Peter, Paul and Mary’s Peter Yarrow, Nahko Bear, Xavier Rudd, and Reggae legends The Wailers
The Cody Blackbird Band carry a message of finding purpose and pursuing one’s life goals in a positive manner to reflect change in one’s self and thus their community and abroad, as well as stressing the importance of keeping culture alive in music.
